Abstract:

The construction of modern people’s cities in China is important for people-centered development and modernization. Using the characteristics of modern people’s cities, a comprehensive evaluation index is created to describe the construction and temporal and spatial patterns of 279 cities in China from 2014 to 2023 using the entropy TOPSIS method, Dagum Gini coefficient, and the spatial Markov chain. The results show that: (1) The construction level of modern people’s cities has risen steadily, according to a spatial pattern where it is high in the east, moderate in the middle and west, and low in the northeast. Further, the development characteristics show a pattern of high levels in the south and low ones in the north. (2) The construction level of modern people’s cities exhibits an obvious core-periphery character in its spatial structure and spatial agglomeration. (3) Regional differences in the construction level of modern people’s cities are gradually narrowing, and such differences form the core source of the overall differences. (4) The diffusion level of modern urban construction is greater than the echo effect. The conclusion of the study provides a decision-making reference for building a modern city.
