THE RESEARCH ON URBAN SPACIAL STRUCTURE OF URUMQI

Abstract: Urban growth and development have attributed to a continuous increase in the relative im-portance of cities in China recently. In order to make urban spatial structure more fairly andreasonably and to construct and manage the cities better, much attention has been paid to issuesof urban spatial structure, such as industrial spatial structure, residential spatial structure, commercial spatial structure, and political spatial structure in the end of the 1980 s in China. This paper regards spacial structure of Urumqi firstly as its study object. According to, he results of analysing historical and nationalities'factors play very important roles in the formationof Urumqi'spatial structure which result in the relative unique characteristics in Urumqi comparing to the other cities in China. Besides these, Urumqi's spatial structure can also be explained by the existing theories and models of urban spatial structure because of its some characteristics of a modernized city. Finally, the paper puts out some suggestions for urban planningand construction in Urumqi, and proposes the conceiving planning of its developing orientationin the future, which include to persist in a principle of sustainable urban development, optimizethe structure of Urumqi central urban area, well work out the development planning of thesatellite town system of Urumqi, require some thinkings of policy and a corrdinative mechanismof administration suiting to the strategic target, and persist in an urban development principlewith the local and nationalities'characteristics.
