Abstract:

The coupled and coordinated development of digital rural construction and the common prosperity of farmers is an important path to promoting high-quality economic and social development. However, existing research has paid insufficient attention to the characteristics of their coupled development, and its internal driving mechanisms have not yet been systematically revealed. Based on provincial panel data in China from 2011 to 2023, this study uses methods such as the longitudinal and transverse ranking method, the improved coupling coordination degree model, and the geographic detector to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and driving mechanisms of the coupling and coordination between digital rural construction and farmers’ common prosperity in China. The results reveal that: (1) The coupling coordination degree between digital rural construction and farmers’ common prosperity in China has gradually increased, revealing an “east-high, west-low” gradient pattern, with polarization occurring at the national level and in the central and western regions. (2) The development of each province presents four types, including “cross-boundary leap type” “low-to-medium level progressive type” “medium-to-high level progressive type”, and “single-step upgrading type”, with the “low-to-medium level progressive type” being the main development type. High-level regions exhibit a significant spatial spillover effect. (3) Innovation, digital justice, ecology, industry, and government are the five driving mechanisms for the coupled and coordinated development of digital rural construction and farmers’ common prosperity, with each playing a role as core, lever, support, foundation, and guidance, respectively. Based on the above conclusions, the study recommends that the coupled and coordinated development of the two should be promoted by optimizing regional coordinated development mechanisms, enhancing spatial synergy effects, and strengthening the leading role of innovation.
