Abstract: In this paper,supported by the GIS,the Shenmu county,which lies in loess plateau of north ShaanXi province,along the line of Great Wall,was chosen as a study region,using land use／cover changes（LUCC）detailed survey data,we have made the matrix form of LUCC through the excel for windows,and analysed the character of LUCC in spacial and temporal dimension during1988~2001;Moreover,we have analysed the driving force in qualitatively,then we have also set up driving force of LUCC model using the software SPSS11.0. The land use／cover changed greatly in the Shenmu county during1988~2001.The cultivated land,unused land and water region are all shrinked,but the unused land changed most greatly,from1988to2001,it reduced125 820.9hm 2.On the country,the change rate of water region is relatively small,it reduced only130.7hm 2during in the past 13year;the others all increased,especially the orchard increased greatly by 2498.8hm 2.According the matrix of land use change in the Shenmu,cultivated land change was the most imported type,which was mainly transformed to orchard,forest,grassland,dwelling land and others,among which forest,grassland and dwelling land have more proportion;unused land mainly transformed to forest ,grassland ,traffic land etc.
The relative changes index of the land use is different in different place.The land in the hills and gully of the Yellow River changed greatly while the land in wind drift sand region changed small.In other words,the land of south-eastern changed more great than did the land of north-westerns.
LUCC is a complex system,which is affected by many comprehensive factors,including both socio-economic and natural and environment.In Shenmu county,the policy was the fundamental driving force of LUCC;in addition,human activity is a directly factor influencing the LUCC;Besides the economical factor also affect LUCC in some extent.
