Abstract: The views of physical geography and the research of hydrology and water resources have been integrated in the research on hydrography in the arid areas in China. The research core of hydrography is "water environment and human", and its contents include evolution laws, phanning and utilization of water resources, water circulation and equilibrium as well as application of the new technologies in hydrography. The research on sustainable management of water resources has specifically enriched the study of hydrography in recent years. The comprehensive surrey of natural resources including water resources and establishment of hydrologic stations in 1950 s were the beginning of the study on the evolution laws of water resources. Currently, the research on hydrography is turned to study the influences of climate change and human activities on runoff and the laws of flood or drought disaster occurrence. The research on the utilization of water resources has been developed from analysis on water using ways to studying the water-saving measures, the relations between water and environment, and the sustainable management of water resources. The research of water circulation has been developed to study the interactions of atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere, and hydrosphere is the center of research. Study on water equilibrium emphasizes on the experiment and simulation of water transformation process. Study on large-scale water process and simulation such as remote sensing and GIS, has been accelerated by using new technologies. Nowdays the emphasis of hydrography is put on the influences of global change on hydrological process. The research of hydrography will enter a new stage of comprehensive and systematical experiment study.
