Abstract: The change of water storage in a region is influenced by various hydro-meteorological factors. This paper applied the UTCSR-RL05 L-2 data, from January 2003 to November 2013, to investigate the temporal and spatial changes of water storage in the north and south slopes of the central Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, China. The water storage changes based on GLDAS model data are used to test GRACE data. The results show as follows: (1)The water storage decreases in the Central Tianshan Mountains from May to September and increases from November to March of the next year. The water storage change range of the north slope is larger than that of the south slope.(2)The water storage changes in both of the north and south slopes show increasing trends in recent 11 years, while the increasing range is greater in the north slope. The start time of annual cycle of water storage change in the north slope is 14 days earlier than that in the south slope.(3)The water storage change in the north and south slopes is mainly affected by precipitation in winter and by evaporation in summer. The water equivalent of snow has some impact on water storage changes in winter and spring. The effect has a time delay in spring.(4)The difference between the precipitation and the evaporation is consistent with the water storage changes in the north slopes, but the consistency in the south slopes is not as good as that in the north slopes.

Key words: water storage changes, the central Tianshan Mountains, contrast of the north slopes and the south slopes, the temporal and spatial changes, influencing factors
