Abstract: Forty topsoil samples were collected from Kyrgyzstan in 2012. Using the methods of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and de-trended correspondence analysis (DCA),the element contents of surface soils were analyzed for revealing the character of element assemblages and its controlling factors. The results showed as follows:(1) the element assemblages of most roadside topsoil, agricultural land topsoil and topsoil along the rivers are different from the other topsoils. Some soils collected from farmlands and roadsides are controlled by the anthropogenic influence. (2) The geochemical mobile elements (Ca,Mg and Sr) have some similarities in supergenic geochemical process, which are prone to relatively significant migration or enrichment. The content variations of Ca,Mg and Sr control the relative contents of the remaining elements (Al,K,Fe,Ti,etc.). Through the de-trended correspondence analysis, the elements (P,Pb,Zn and Cu) and the stable element (Al,Fe,etc.) are controlled by different factors. The roadside topsoil is rich in Pb,Zn and Cu,and P and Cu are significantly enriched in agricultural land soil, which shows that the elements of P,Pb,Zn and Cu have been influenced by anthropogenic factors. The element contents of Pb,Cu and Zn in the soils collected from roadsides are approximately higher than the average value of 235%,91.3% and 135.7%,respectively. The elements of P and Cu also have relatively higher levels in the topsoil of farmlands. The element contents of P and Cu in the soils are higher than the average value of 74.4% and 24%. Overall,it is useful to study the characteristics of element assemblages in the surface soil for environmental quality assessment and the comprehensive treatment of soil pollution.
