Abstract: In this paper,based in analysis of the historical evolution of urbanization in Xinjiang at the stage of 1952~2001,affirmed the great progress of urbanization in xinjiang,pointed out following traits during this stage：（1） The speed of urbanization is obviously lagged behind that of economic development,it also shows the discrepancy in different stages.By calculating “the deviation coefficient of urbanization”,these data explain the process of urbanization was faster than that of industrialization for these ten years before1978,but it was lower for these ten years after1978; （2） The building of city was more affected by nation’s political environment,it was in a unstable situation; （3） The main composition of the city’s system has now turned into large and middle cities from small cities-towns in1980s,these city’s development pattern are changing from extension to intensive; （4） The mechanism of urbanization is the style of “from up to down” urbanization,the building and developing of xinjiang cities rely on being pushed by exploiting resources and investing infrastructure; （5） The spatial distribution of cities is out of balance; the different regions are more clear.The system of cities having oasis character is taking shape.At last,the measures of speeding the process of urbanization in Xinjiang are put forward：constructing the rational system of cities-towns,adjusting the structure of production,reforming the system of administrative control,fulfilling market-mechanism function,fasting investing and financing structure reform in these cities.
