Abstract: Xinjiang is one of the important development regions of the land resources suiting for farming in China all a-long. It is planned to reclaim the wasteland suiting farming for 310 000 hm2 in Xinjiang during the "Ninth Five-Year Plan". Along with the continuous reclamation of the wasteland, the area of the reserve resources of landsuiting for farming is continuously reduced in Xinjiang, their reclaiming conditions are more and more poor, andsome reclaimed land is become as the low-yield land or abandoned from cultivation, which results in a great wasteof the very limited land reclaiming funds. The area, quality and distribution of the reserve resources of land suit-ing for farming in Xinjiang at present must be thoroughly researched so as to reclaim the wasteland suiting forfarming in a planned way and make the ideal economic returns. In this paper, the reserve resources of land suit-ing for farming in Xinjiang at present is classified based on the technological level of wasteland reclamation andland use and of agriculturai production, the water resources and the reclaiming funds, and great attention is paidto protection of the ecological environment and coordinative development of agriculture, forestry, and animal hus-bandry. Some new progresses are achieved in the paper : (1) On the aspect of the classification system: (a) par-tial aeolian sandy land is regarded as the resources of land suiting for farming; (b) the level land covered by thewell-growing forests (mainly the popular diversifolia forests) is evaluated as the forest land only according to thesituation of shortage of the forest resources and the requirement of the ecological environment protection; (c) thewell-growing forage grasslands in grade one and two are evaluated as grasslands only. (2) The classification is di-vided into two steps: (a) the total reserve resources of land suiting for farming is firstly classified based on theinternal conditions of land; (b) then the suitably-reclaimed reserve resources of land suiting for farming is classi-fied based on the external conditions of land reclaimation.

Key words: reserve land resources, land suiting farming, Xinjiang
