Abstract: Along with the rapid development of modern industry in recent years, the urbanization has been greatly improved in Xining City, Qinghui Province. Its environmental problems, however, have been becoming more and more serious and have become the major restrictive factors for the rapid and sustainable economic development in Xining. They are as follows at present： (1) The serious air pollution; (2) The shortage of water resources and aggravating surface water pollution and groundwater contamination; (3) The quickly-increased urban rubbish; (4) The crowded traffic and over-standard noise pollution; (5) The fragile ecological environment and serious soil erosion, and so on. In this paper, the main environmental problems existing in Xining City are discussed, and their formation causes are analyzed. It is pointed out that sustainable development is the urgent demand and necessary choice for the economic development in Xinjing City. Based on these, some countermeasures are put forward： (1) It is suggested to intensify the propaganda and education of sustainable development so as to enhance the whole urban resident's awarenees of the need to protect the environment; (2) It must be depended on the advanced and new science and technology to improve the production technology of the industrial and mineral enterprises; (3) The construction of the systematical projects for reutilizing the wastes water, waste gas and waste material should be sped up; (4) The construction of the urban in frastructure for environmental protection must be sped up; (5) It is suggested to strengthen the enforcement of environmental protection laws, superision and management of the environment; (6) The investment should be increased for the environmental protection.
