Abstract: Through the use of geographical information methods to visualize the cultural landscape for geographical names on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, China, different types of geographical names were classified and nine types were categorized. Based on these results, GIS technology was used to classify the punctuated geographical names and analyze their kernel densities. The agglomeration and distribution of different types of geographical names were visually analyzed, focusing on the history, economy, nature, and the north slope of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang. For the case of ethnic cultures, the agglomeration and distribution of different types of place names were analyzed. These names generally reflect the relationships between the distribution of cultural landscapes and the geographical features of Xinjiang and its historical and political, natural, economic, cultural attributes as well as ethnic cultures; these names fully embody the cultural diversity of Xinjiang as a culturally diverse region. The cultural landscape pattern of various settlements on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains has its own unique characteristics. The names of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps are mainly distributed in the western part of Urumqi, which is located in the lower reaches of the Oasis and is at a distance from the main traffic belt. This relationship is basically consistent with the restrictions imposed by historical conditions on troop relocations. Most of the natural names are located in the upper part of the alluvial fan and along the larger river basin and are related to the variations of natural geography around the alluvial fan both upstream and along the mainstream of the river. The pattern of Gong,Yun geographical names is related to the conditions of historical development at the oasis and is generally distributed along the main traffic belt in the upper and middle parts of the alluvial fan. This region is located in northern Xinjiang and ethnic minorities are mainly represented by mountainous or piedmont nomadic people. The distribution of geographical names is generally the same as the ethnic distribution. Digital place names are generally named after the natural and human landscapes in their early stages of development. They are generally located in the downstream areas of the Oasis and are somewhat distant from the main line of traffic. The geographical names occurred earlier and are generally located near towns with good water and soil conditions and also with economic transportation. The immigration place names generally have the same characteristics as those of the same county; immigration from the same area generally involves people gathering together. These place names originated from Gansu, Henan, Guangdong, and Shaanxi Provinces and these areas have their own densely populated residential areas. Because there are large land areas that are difficult to use in Xinjiang, these lands are rarely visited by people and it is difficult to generate artificial names, which are usually directly subordinate to the local grassroots peoples governments. Other name types do not exhibit the clear characteristics of unity. Almost all regions are represented and are denser in the Wulumuqi-Shihezi region where the economy is more developedThe study of geographical names is a crucial scientific research effort and a special research direction in cultural geography. It is hoped that in future studies, we will continue to deepen the study of Xinjiang’s geographical names in multicultural ethnic areas
