Based on the data of POI education facilities, the spatial distribution characteristics of basic education resources in main urban area of Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, China were analyzed at street scale using ArcGIS’s standard deviation ellipse, kernel density estimation and GeoDa exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA).The results show as follows: (1) From the spatial distribution perspective, the basic education resources in Xi’an City showed a pattern with a high density in the city center and a low density out of the center, a high density in the west of the city and a low density in the east of the city, and a high density in the south of the city but a low density in the north of the city. In the view of the direction of this distribution, there seems to have a line from the northeast to the southwest with the latter having a high density. (2) Location wise, the kindergartens and primary schools gather in bulk to form multi-center layout, while middle schools are mainly concentrated in the center of the city. (3) From the spatial agglomeration characteristics, the High-High districts are mainly concentrated in the south and north of the city, while the Low-Low districts are mainly concentrated in the special areas of the central urban area. In general, the spatial distribution characteristics of basic education resources in Xi’an City based on street scale can clearly reflect the spatial pattern of basic education resources in Xi’an City, which could provide a theoretical basis for the relevant government departments to rationally plan the layout of educational facilities.
