Abstract: Xinjing is a typical arid area in China and has the distinctive desert tourist resources. Developing desert tourist resources has practical significance to perfect the constitution of tourism products and make resources advantage well in Xinjing.
Desert tourism belongs to the special tourism product. It must be depended on the primitive and natural ecological environment and cultural environment in arid area. Compared with the ordinary tourism, it stresses on "exploring" of tourism items and routes and "decision-making" of tourism forms. Xinjing has distinctive desert tourist resources, which has an extensive area, outstanding cultural content and different kinds of types. These factors provide sufficient material base for developing desert tourism.
Exploiting desert tourism in Xinjing has much potential. First, individual and regional characteristics of desert tourism comply with the main trend of tourism in international market. Second, hot effect of "Silk Road" and desert-exploring tourism which is as one of ecological tourist productions of "99'ecological tourist year" give a chance for desert tourism. At last, there are huge marker demands to desert tourist productions, to which international, especially Japanese, and domestic tourists show much favoritism.
By analyzing above, this paper thinks that the advantage and disadvantage conditions should be clearly realized and rationally utilized during developing desert tourism in Xinjing. On the base of this, three development directions are put forward: (1) relying on "Silk Road" hot effect, desert tourism should be brought into series of productions of "Silk Road" and their combinatorial superiority; (2) Exploring desert tourism depends on regional combinatorial condition and feasibility of market; (3) Two tourist routes should be developed prior at present.
