Abstract: The concept of sustainable development has been universally accepted in academic circles, scientific and technological cinrcles and policymaking bodies.Sustainable agriculture is an important objective in sustainable development.Agricultural sustainability can be judged from three aspects,i.e.ecological,economic and social sustainabilities.Among which ecological sustainability is the base of agricultural sustainability, and economic and social sustainabilities are dependent on ecological sustainability. Therefore, ecological sustainability can be as one of the basic targets of sustainable agriculture.
Sustainable agriculture(SA)possesses the clear ecological features because of its background of generation, concept, attribute and practice, therefore the studies on SA need the guidance of ecology. In ecology, regional sustainable agriculture should belong to the field of landscape ecology(LE)due to its emphasis, assumption, scale, process and dynamics in ecosystem.Landscape ecological planning(LEP)is the application area of LE.Therefore LEP can be taken as the spatial approach to realize RSA.Two cases are provided to realize this approach.

Key words: regional sustainable agriculture, landscape ecology, landscape ecological planning, farming-pastoral transitional zone
